Phillies' Ranger Suarez Breaks Silence on Moving to Bullpen For Postseason

The Philadelphia Phillies have a problem, and it's a good one to have. They have too many good starting pitchers. There are five quality starters on the Major League roster right now, with multiple waiting in the wings to get their chance.

To resolve the Phillies' "issue," there has been discussion, including from Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, to move some of the starters to the bullpen once everyone is healthy.

One of the main starters mentioned as a candidate to head to the bullpen is Ranger Suárez. After his latest masterpiece, Matt Gelb of The Athletic shared his thoughts on the potential new role.

“That’s a conversation that was never brought up to me,” Suárez said. “I always wanted to be a starter this year. That’s my usual role, and that’s what I wanted to do. But that being said, what I want is for this team to win. I’m open to do whatever it takes to help this team win."

Suárez is willing to help the team win no matter what, even if it means moving to the bullpen. But he prefers to stay in the starting rotation. Based on his performance this season, the Phillies should also think twice about moving him to a reliever role.

In 2025, Suárez has pitched in ten games. He has a 6-2 record, which includes a 7.2 inning loss where he allowed one run, while getting no run support. Overall, despite allowing seven earned runs in his first start back from injury, he has a 2.08 ERA on the season.

Suárez, since his second start of the year, has thrown nine-straight quality starts, including four outings where he didn't give up a run. In his ten outings in 2025, he's struck out 59 batters and walked 16.

He was named an All-Star for the first time in 2024, and based on his production since coming off the injured list in 2025, he's been even better. With how great Suárez has been, moving him to the bullpen seems foolish.

While the Phillies will have a tough decision down the road, for now, Suárez will remain in the rotation and continue carving up offenses around baseball.
