The Philadelphia Phillies placed starting pitcher Aaron Nola on the injured list due to a sprained ankle. The stint began on May 16.
Initially, the hope was that Nola would only have to spend the minimum amount of time on the 15-day injured list, but that appears to have changed.
According to Lochlahn March of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Nola's recovery from his right ankle sprain is "taking a bit longer than the Phillies had hoped."
On the evening of May 24, prior to a West Coast matchup with the Athletics, Phillies manager Rob Thomson told reporters that "Nola is holding off on throwing from a mound until he feels no discomfort in his ankle, and he still felt sore on [May 24]."
March added that Nola was expected to throw a bullpen session during the weekend series against the Athletics, but noted that this is "now looking unlikely."
"I thought by this weekend he'd be throwing a bullpen, but he still feels it in there. So, just no sense in pushing it," Thomson told reporters.
Continuing: "We'll just have to wait and see how much time it is. [If] it gets too long, and I don't know how long that would be, we'd probably have to get him on some hitters."
For clarity, a rehab assignment was not originally a guarantee for Nola, as it might not have been necessary in the event of a short IL stint. If this becomes a longer absence, however, Thomson acknowledges that the plan could change.
Nola is off to a career-worst start to the season in 2025, with an ERA of 6.16 and a WHIP of 1.510. Through 9 starts, his record is 1-7.
