Phillies Reportedly Figured Out Reason for Jordan Romano's Struggles

Perhaps the Philadelphia Phillies figure something out with Jordan Romano. Let's remember now, despite being one of the worst closers in Major League Baseball to start this season, it's tough to get too concerned.

Yes, fans are always going to be upset about a guy not performing to the best of his abilities, but Romano has been excellent throughout his career.

Outside of being injured with the Toronto Blue Jays during the 2024 campaign, he's been one of the better relievers in baseball, evident by his two All-Star nods during the 2022 and 2023 campaigns.

And there may have been a reason for his recent struggles. According to ESPN's David Cone, when speaking on the Sunday Night Baseball broadcast, the Phillies thought that Romano had been tipping his pitches.

“We talked to Rob Thomson, the manager of the Phillies, before the game who seemed to think Romano was tipping his pitches,” Cone said. “They feel like they’ve corrected it.”

Whether that will change everything remains to be seen, but Romano was much better during his outing against the Cubs on Sunday night. He struck out one, allowing zero earned runs and zero hits during his one inning of work.

With a 13.50 ERA before that outing, he lowered it to 12.19.

It isn't a guarantee that he'll have that closer role forever, but this was a step in the right direction, and the Phillies need him to be the guy he was in Toronto.

At the very least, the Phillies need him to get outs when it matters most, whether that be in the 8th or 9th inning.
