The Philadelphia Phillies have two primary goals in mind as the postseason approaches: retain one of the top two seeds in the National League to avoid a potential wild card series and reach the playoffs with a fully healthy team intact.
While they remain on track to accomplish the first goal, the team has dealt with two significant injuries to All-Stars Alec Bohm and Trea Turner, severely testing the infield’s depth.
In Turner’s absence specifically, veteran utility man Edmundo Sosa has filled in at shortstop. Although not the expectation, Sosa has done a nice job over his last six games keeping the Phillies offense afloat, batting .313 with a .750 OPS at the bottom of the lineup.
During Friday’s series opener against the Kansas City Royals, Sosa was noticeably limping throughout the game, appearing to suffer from a lower body injury. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Weston Wilson came in to pinch-hit for Sosa, and in the top half of the eighth took over at second base with Bryson Stott shifting to shortstop.
After the game, manager Rob Thomson announced that Sosa had been dealing with groin tightness and would be day-to-day moving forward. (h/t Ty Daubert of Phillies Nation)

He’s day to day, and they’ll check him out tomorrow.
If Sosa is forced to miss extended time, it would create a crisis up the middle for Philadelphia heading into October.
Although Turner is expected to return to the lineup, there’s uncertainty over whether it will happen during the regular season, and the team could definitely benefit from the added rest that comes with a first-round bye.
With the third-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers riding a four-game win streak, there’s still enough time for them to overtake the Phillies, so the pressure remains.
