After a strong Opening-Day performance from Alec Bohm, there was palpable hope he could return to his All-Star form from 2024. However, he's struggled mightily since then and has drawn the ire of Philadelphia Phillies fans. Manager Rob Thomson defended Bohm amid his rough start to 2025.
On Phillies Postgame Live from NBC Sports Philadelphia, Thomson was asked about Bohm's struggles. Thomson defended Bohm, expressing his trust in Bohm amid his struggles to start the year.
"He'll get out of it. I mean, this guy was the All-Star third-baseman last year in the National League. I'm not going to pull the shoot on him yet. Despite what everybody says. I have a lot of trust in him."
Bohm 0-5 with four strikeouts in the win over the Atlanta Braves. He's batting .200 on the year through 40 at-bats, with just eight hits, one double which came in the first game of the year, and three runs batted in.
His struggles have been lingering since the second half of 2024, and his status has been up in the air since his benching in the postseason against the New York Mets. With his terrible start, combined with Edmundo Sosa getting off to a strong start, Bohm could be benched soon.
While Thomson defends Bohm, he seems receptive to moving Bohm down in the batting order. Bohm has hit behind Bryce Harper, but his struggles open the door for another hitter to hit behind Harper. Nick Castellanos or Kyle Schwarber are most likely to hit behind Harper, and that change could come soon.
Bohm is one for his last 18 at-bats and has just one RBI since Opening Day. His offensive struggles have carried over from the end of the 2024 season. While his future with the Phillies doesn't look great, Thomson still has his back.
Thomson isn't ready to pull the plug on Bohm just yet, but the wording is something to monitor. He said "I'm not going to pull the shoot on him just yet," leaving the door open to a demotion of some kind if Bohm continues to struggle.
Bohm has been one of the biggest disappointments for the Phillies so far. While Thomson defends him, Bohm is on a short leash and could be demoted if his struggles continue. In the meantime, Thomson believes and trusts in Bohm.
