The Philadelphia Phillies have a problem, and if it isn't addressed in the next few months, it could become a serious issue.
After demonstrating that they were one of the top teams in MLB over the past few seasons, it appears that this core has reached its limit, and as a result, the Phillies may need to make some significant changes soon.
While many fans are rightfully upset about the Phillies slow start, sitting at 13-12 and five games behind the New York Mets after being swept by them in Queens, skipper Rob Thomson reminded fans to stay positive, adding that this lineup will eventually turn it around and the Phillies will be a much better team.
"They've been through this before," Thomson said prior to the game on Wednesday, per Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. "I feel like everybody around us is panicking. … We're fine.
"Guys' numbers historically, there's a lot of slug in that lineup. And we're gonna go through another time during the course of the year when we don't slug. And maybe one more time where we don't slug. It's just the way the game is."
Thomson should be the last one making any suggestions to Phillies fans, as many of them are fed up with him, too.
However, if Thomson has proven one thing throughout his career, it's that he knows how to win regular-season games in Philadelphia. At the very least, the team has to start doing that shortly.
There's far too much talent on this roster for them to be struggling the way they have been, a concern as the Phillies have a tough stretch coming up with games against the Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks in two of their next three series.
