Phillies' Rob Thomson Sends Strong Alec Bohm Message

One of the largest storylines during the early going of the Philadelphia Phillies' 2025 season has been the offensive output of third baseman Alec Bohm. After a scorching hot start to 2024, Bohm has cooled off drastically, with his power disappearing from his game.

In an article from Matt Gelb of The Athletic, Phillies manager Rob Thomson was asked about Bohm's lack of power recently. Thomson's response showed his belief in the 28-year-old third baseman.

"He had a ball (Saturday) night that I thought had a chance to go out, and he's hit a couple balls like that lately. So, hopefully, it's coming."

Thomson's message amid Bohm's struggles points towards hope. While Bohm hasn't hit a home run yet in 2025, he has shown flashes of that power at points during the season.

Across Bohm's 127 at-bats in 2025, he has just 29 hits, five doubles, one triple, and 10 RBI. His batting average is at .228, and it was a little over a week ago. His offensive output has been significantly worse in 2025 than it was in 2024, but the major question mark is his power ability.

After putting on a show in the MLB Home Run Derby in 2024, Bohm's power has regressed. His slugging percentage in 2025 is .283, the eighth lowest in baseball. He also has a .550 OPS, the tenth worst in baseball among qualified batters.

According to Bohm's Baseball Savant page, his power issues don't stem from his exit velocity or ability to barrel a baseball. The statistic that stands out his his launch angle, which is down to 6.5 after sitting above 10 in each of the last three seasons.

While the underlying metrics point towards a positive picture for Bohm, there are still questions surrounding his power. Bohm has never been a power hitter, but his regression has been noticeable in 2025.

But Thomson believes in Bohm's ability to generate more power. He's shown the ability to hit the ball hard, and his metrics still look good. Bohm just needs to put it together, and Thomson believes he can.
