Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola’s 2025 campaign has steadily gone from bad to worse to flat-out frustrating.
The Phillies announced on Wednesday that they’ve shut Nola down with right side stiffness. The two-time Cy Young finalist went on the injured list last month following a right ankle injury.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson called Nola’s soreness “very mild,” according to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb. Nola was scheduled to throw live BP on Thursday.
Nola landed on the IL after going 1-7 with a 6.19 ERA in nine starts. Nola walked 16 and allowed 11 homers over his first 49 2/3 innings, with his last start being a 12-hit, nine-run outing against the St. Louis Cardinals on May 14.
It’s nonetheless the latest tough blow for Nola, who told reporters last week that his ankle recovery is “taking a little bit longer” than he expected.
“I want to get it right to where I don’t really feel anything and to go 100%,” Nola said.
“I thought it would be a good after a couple starts,” Nola added. “It would progress and kind of ease off on its own. But it didn’t really, so I’m on the IL.”
The Phillies can only afford so many injuries, as signs point to a heated two-horse NL East race between Philadelphia and the rival New York Mets. Only half a game separates those two clubs, with the Washington National already nine games behind the second-place Phillies.
Nola signed a seven-year, $172 million deal ahead of the 2024 season. He is 105-86 with a 3.78 ERA and 35.6 bWAR in 277 games with the Phillies.
