Phillies' Trea Turner Reveals New Offensive Approach Amid Recent Hot-Stretch

Phillies shortstop Trea Turner has been heating up along with most of the lineup. In his last 11 games, Turner is batting 20-for-48 (.417) with six RBI and ten runs scored.

During Wednesday's game in Tampa, one night after Alec Bohm snapped a long homer-less streak, Turner connected for his first long ball since April 9th..

"I’m just taking my hits, really," Turner told MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. "I feel like my two-strike hitting has been good. I’m hitting the ball the other way pretty good. I just need to start pulling it in the air. It was nice to see that happen."

Turner has been noticeably patient at the plate this year. He is taking considerably more pitches, and it's resulted in 13 walks to this point. He had 27 all of last season.

Turner also had a pair of doubles over this recent stretch - something he is used to putting up a lot of. He had 39 in 2022 and 35 in 2023, but a six week stint on the injured list last year cut that total down significantly.

According to Trea, getting his power numbers up while still being an on-base threat is his hitting philosophy now.

"There’s times when... you’re maybe not looking for damage, you’re just looking for first base," Turner said. “I want to be a dangerous hitter. You’ve got to hit doubles and then take your hits when they give them to you. I feel like I’ve taken my hits, but that power is still on its way hopefully.”

Turner is looking to accomplish this while juggling responsibilities in the leadoff and two hole spots, depending on the pitching matchup. If he continues this recent trend, he'll be exactly what the Phillies have needed the past few seasons - a dependable contact hitter who can set the table for guys like Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Nick Castellanos.
