Mike Trout to the Philadelphia Phillies has long been a pipedream by many in the area. The superstar outfielder grew up in Millville, NJ which is less than an hour way from the city.
He still holds season tickets for the Philadelphia Eagles and is a massive fan of the Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia 76ers.
Because of these connections, many thought that Trout might return home to play for the Phillies at some point during his career.
Those wishes from Philadelphia fans were put to bed when the superstar signed a 12-year, $426.5 million extension with the Los Angeles Angels in 2019 that was the richest contract in North American sports history at the time.
Still, there was some hope that maybe the Phillies might be able to trade for the local kid before his career ends.
That speculation began to ramp up following the 2023 season with Shohei Ohtani hitting free agency and the Angels potentially hitting the reset button. Trout went through another injury plagued year, but would still net them plenty of building block pieces in a trade.
But, those dreams have once again been crushed as Los Angeles' general manager Perry Minasian has definitively said that they won't be trading their superstar this offseason according to Sam Blum of The Athletic.
It makes sense from a financial perspective for the Angels.
If they do indeed lose Ohtani, they'll still need an attraction to get people to the ballpark.
Trout still provides that juice no matter how many injuries he's battled the past few years.
Philadelphia fans will have to continue holding out hope that one day they'll see Trout play for the Phillies because it seemingly won't be in 2024.
