Photo of Yankee Stadium shows shockingly poor air quality due to Canadian wildfires

Smoke from the raging wildfires in Canada have billowed over the northern United States, leading to remarkable images that were seen throughout the media on Tuesday.

In terms of sports, this tweet from New York Yankees beat reporter Max Goodman from NJ Advance Media spotlights not only how far the plumes have traveled but how dangerous the air quality had become in New York City.

Air quality alerts were issued throughout much of the northern states, with plumes stretching from eastern Canada all the way to Minnesota. As the day progressed in some regions such as the mid-Atlantic states, the hazy conditions worsened, even after brief thunderstorms. Goodman posted the photo at 6:40 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, which was 30 minutes before the Yankees would square off against the Chicago White Sox.

According to the New York Times, the air quality had gotten so bad in New York City and Toronto that it briefly hit a milestone no city ever wants to reach:

"Toronto and New York City briefly ranked among the top 10 major cities with the poorest air quality on Tuesday, according to IQAir, a technology company that tracks air quality and pollution around the world. Historically, Toronto and New York City do not rank in the top 3,000 cities with the worst air quality, according to IQAir."

Although the dense clouds will lighten up somewhat overnight, the smoky climate will stick around at least through Wednesday. This is the second time in the last month that smoke from wildfires in Canada has made its way south of the border, and there are fears that this could be an extremely active summer for wildfires from the country.
