Pirates Injury Updates: Hayes Resumes All Baseball Activities, Delay Starts Rehab Assignment
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Pirates Director of Sports Medicine spoke to members of the media at PNC Park to provide updates to the latest injured players.

Here’s what he shared:

Ke’Bryan Hayes

Hayes, who is currently on the 10-day injured list with a lower back injury, is getting closer to a return. The Pirates’ third baseman has resumed all baseball activities.

At this point, it’s still to be determined if Hayes will require a rehab assignment before he is activated off the injured list. Hayes was placed on the IL on May 11.

Jason Delay

Delay played in just one game for the Pirates this season before landing on the injured list with a knee injury, which resulted in meniscus surgery. The operation took place last month.

Delay will begin a rehab assignment on Saturday with the Low-A Bradenton Marauders. Tomczyk says if all goes according to plan, Delay will transition to Triple-A Indianapolis early next week.

Endy Rodríguez

In his recovery from Tommy John surgery, Rodríguez has already been swinging from the left side of the plate. He’s approaching the sixth-month mark post-surgery and will begin to throw in the near future. At the seven-month mark, Rodríguez will begin to swing from the right side of the plate.

Johan Oviedo

Like Rodríguez, Oviedo is also recovering from offseason Tommy John surgery. Oviedo has crossed the six-month threshold and started throwing at the Florida Complex League last week. He’s up to 45 feet and should progress to 60 feet.

Marco Gonzales and Ryan Borucki

Both left-handers have been on the injured list with injuries to their pitching arms for most of the season. Both Gonzales and Borucki are starting a plyo program which is the last hurdle to clear before the begin throwing.

Bubba Chandler

Down on the Pirates’ farm, Chandler was placed on the injured list with mild forearm tightness but threw a side session on Friday and if all checks out well he will progress back to games.
