Pirates reinstate Kirby Yates from IL, DFA Camilo Doval

The Pittsburgh Pirates swapped one former All-Star closer for another Tuesday when Kirby Yates was activated from the injured list and fellow right-hander Camilo Doval was designated for assignment.

Yates, 39, has appeared in a combined 44 games for the Pirates and Los Angeles Angels this season and has three saves while going 2-5 with a 3.40 ERA. The two-time All-Star saved as many as 41 games for the San Diego Padres in 2019 and has 101 career saves over 12 seasons with a 3.36 ERA for eight different clubs.

Yates last pitched on Aug. 30 because of a right shoulder impingement.

Doval, 29, is 3-2 with a 4.30 ERA in 64 combined relief appearances this season for the New York Yankees and Pirates. The one-time All-Star saved as many as 39 games for the San Francisco Giants in 2023 and has 109 career saves over six seasons.

Yates was acquired in an Aug. 3 trade from the Angels, two days after Doval was acquired in a deal from the Yankees.
