Pirates reliever Edgar Santana suspended 80 games, will miss entire 2020 season

The Pittsburgh Pirates will be without one of their relievers once the Major League Baseball season begins next month.

Edgar Santana was suspended 80 games without pay by MLB for testing positive for a banned substance, according to ESPN. MLB said the 28-year-old was positive for Boldenone, a performance enhancer.

The right-hander missed the entire 2019 season because of Tommy John surgery, and now will miss the entire 2020 campaign as it's been shortened to 60 games due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2018, Santana appeared in 69 games for the Pirates, going 3-4 with a 3.31 ERA. He struck out 74 batters in just over 66 innings that season.

Despite losing Santana, the Pirates still have Michael Feliz, Clay Holmes, Nick Burdi and Keone Kela, among others, in its bullpen.
