Pirates tie MLB record by striking out 20 times in nine inning game

The Pittsburgh Pirates strike out more than almost every other team in the league, currently sitting second in the league behind only the Los Angeles Angels.

It has been a year-long problem, and they hit rock bottom for that area on Sunday when they tied a major league record by striking out 20 times in a nine-inning game in their 7-3 loss to the New York Mets.

Every player with a plate appearance struck out at least once, while six different players (Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds, Cal Mitchell, Ke'Bryan Hayes, Jack Suwinski, and Greg Allen) struck out at least two times.

Suwinski had the worst showing of the day, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout in each at-bat.

Even pinch-hitter Michael Chavis struck out in his lone plate appearance of the game.

The Pirates went against Mets ace Jacob DeGrom to start the day and he struck out 13 batters in only five innings of work. Seth Lugo, Joely Rodriguez, and Trevor May added the other seven strikeouts over the next four innings.

It has been an incredibly bad year for the Pirates as they continue to march for what could be a second straight 100-loss season, while the offense has been among the league's worst in every major category. It has been so bad that they even won a game earlier this season while being no-hit.
