Pittsburgh Pirates Starting Pitcher Paul Skenes With Tremendous Start

Pittsburgh Pirates Starting Pitcher Paul Skenes put together another solid start this afternoon on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He tossed 6.2 scoreless innings and punched out 7. Skenes helped the Pittsburgh Pirates prevail 10-1.

Skenes has been great in 2025. He is 4-5 with a 2.15 ERA. He is ninth in the league in ERA, ninth in strikeouts, and sixth in WHIP. Pittsburgh’s offensive explosion was a welcome sight for the star pitcher as his team has struggled to provide him with run support in 2025. How will Skenes fare the next time he toes the slab?

It has been another difficult year for the Pirates. They are in last place in the National League Central at 21-36. Even though the offense was good today, the unit has struggled throughout 2025. They are 26th in batting average, 29th in home runs, and 29th in runs scored. Center Fielder Oneil Cruz is third in the league in stolen bases. He is the only Pirates player anywhere near the league lead in an offensive category.

Pittsburgh’s pitching staff has been mediocre. They are 18th in ERA, 16th in WHIP, and 15th in opposing batting average. Skenes is not the only Pirates pitcher that has been good. Starting Pitcher Andrew Heaney has a 3.41 ERA.

Final Thoughts

The next scheduled start for Skenes is at home on June 4 against the Houston Astros. He faced them in July 2024 and fared well. He surrendered 1 earned run over 6 innings of work. Skenes will look to reproduce that performance the next time he takes the mound.
