The Pittsburgh Pirates just capped off an exciting week. Last week featured both high points and low points for the ballclub. With a 1-0 loss against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, Pittsburgh made history. They are the first team in league history to have back-to-back series of 3+ games with a sweep of shutouts for and against, in either order.
Pittsburgh swept the St. Louis Cardinals in three shutout wins before being shut out in all three games against the Seattle Mariners. The Pirates are the fourth team in league history to play six consecutive shutout games. Will the Pittsburgh Pirates keep this streak going in their next game?
The Pirates have played 6 straight shutouts — either throwing one or being shut out
That’s tied for the longest such streak in MLB history, with:
1953 Senators⁰1949 White Sox⁰1919 Cubs⁰1903 Pirates

It has been another rough season for the Pirates. They are in last place in the National League Central at 38-53. Pittsburgh’s offense has been poor in 2025. They are 26th in batting average, 29th in runs scored, and last in home runs.
Pittsburgh’s pitching staff has been one of the best in Major League Baseball. They are seventh in ERA, fifth in opposing batting average, and third in WHIP. Starting Pitcher Paul Skenes was named a National League All-Star yesterday and has a great case to start the 2025 MLB All-Star Game. He is top 10 in the league in ERA, strikeouts, and WHIP. The Pirates have allowed the fourth-fewest runs in the league, but are still one of the league’s worst teams. That is because they have been unable to overcome a miserable offense.
The Pittsburgh Pirates return to the diamond this evening when they visit the Kansas City Royals to begin a three-game set. Pittsburgh will look to break out of its shutout streak tonight with a win.
