Player Profile: Logan Gilbert

Logan Keith Gilbert was born on May 5, 1997, in Winter Park, Florida. He has one brother. Gilbert attended Wekiva High School. He was the 500th-best prospect after his senior year. Gilbert went on to play his college baseball with the Stetson Hatters.

Logan Gilbert’s Collegiate Career

In his freshman season in 2016, Gilbert appeared in 21 games with five starts, going 2–1 with a 2.74 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 49 innings. In the summer, he pitched for the Bethesda Big Train in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, where he posted a 1.70 ERA with 28 strikeouts over 26¹⁄₃ innings.

As a sophomore in 2017, he would appear in 15 games with 12 starts. Gilbert posted a 10–0 record with a 2.02 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 89 innings. That summer, he played for the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod League. Gilbert was named a league all-star. In his junior year, he went 11–2 with a 2.72 ERA over 16 starts. Gilbert was named the ASUN Conference Pitcher of the Year twice.

Gilbert, entering the draft, was ranked the 16th prospect overall. He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners 14th overall. He signed for $3.88 million on June 16.

Logan Gilbert Professional Tenure

2019

Gilbert made his professional debut on opening day for the West Virginia Power. He also went on to play for High-A Modesto and Double-A Arkansas in that season. In five games with West Virginia, he posted a 1-0 record and a 1.59 ERA. In Modesto, he would start 12 games, going 5–3 with a 1.73 ERA, striking out 73 batters over 62.1 innings. Gilbert, in nine starts with Arkansas, pitched to a 4–2 record with a 2.88 ERA.

2020

The 2020 minor league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gilbert did pitch in an intrasquad exhibition game.

2021

Gilbert was a top 40 prospect entering the 2021 season. He would start the season with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers, earning a win in his only game with the Rainiers. On May 13th, Gilbert got his big league promotion. He made his debut against the Cleveland Indians (Now known as the Guardians). He tossed four innings, giving up four runs and taking the loss. He’d earn his first career win on June 6 against AL West Rival Los Angeles Angels. Gilbert finished his rookie season with a 6–5 record in 24 starts. He posted a 4.68 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 119²⁄₃ innings.

2022

In his first full MLB season, Gilbert posted a 13–6 record with a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts, going 185.2 innings. Gilbert posted a 1.18 WHIP and struck out 174 batters. On September 30, Gilbert allowed one run in eight innings against the Oakland Athletics. Gilbert got a no-decision in his only postseason appearance in the ALDS.

2023

Gilbert went 13–7 with a 3.73 ERA and 189 strikeouts in 190²⁄₃ innings. His 5.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranked third in the American League, trailing his teammate George Kirby.

2024

This would be his best season to date. He was an All-Star and finished sixth in AL Cy Young voting. Gilbert led the MLB in innings pitched with 208.2 innings. He posted a 0.89 WHIP, which led the majors. His 220 strikeouts ranked 6th, he was eight shy of the MLB lead. He finished the season with a 3.23 ERA.
