Polarizing Ex-Red Sox Hurler Claimed Off Waivers In Surprise Move

The Boston Red Sox may have struggled with their lack of pitching depth last season, which led to some changes earlier in the offseason.

The Red Sox designated a polarizing pitcher for assignment a few months back due to a rocky stint in Boston, and after a pitstop with the Seattle Mariners, he is now on the move again.

"The (Miami) Marlins have claimed RHP Kaleb Ort off waivers from Seattle," the Miami Herald's Jordan McPherson reported Friday. 

Ort had a 6.31 ERA with a 51-to-24 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .297 batting average against and 1.68 WHIP in 51 1/3 innings over the last two seasons with the Red Sox.

This was a surprising move from the Mariners as they claimed Ort off of waivers towards the beginning of free agency when he was designated for assignment by the Red Sox. 

For Miami, they acquired a depth arm that if utilized correctly could produce a few decent outings. 

As for the Red Sox, although they are in desperate need of improving their pitching staff, moving on from Ort was likely in the best interest of both Ort and the organization.
