Predicting Cubs’ biggest move before MLB trade deadline

The Chicago Cubs have endured an inconsistent season at times but they are a contender nonetheless. Chicago is set to enter the second half of the 2026 campaign with a 54-42 overall record, which is good for second place in the National League Central standings. The Cubs’ pitching has been hit hard by injuries, so trading for a starter will likely be the goal before the upcoming MLB trade deadline.

Sure, the idea of trading for Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Tarik Skubal is exciting. The Tigers should trade Skubal despite the fact that they are in contention, as he is going to be a free agent following the season. However, I do not expect Skubal to end up with the Cubs.

There are a number of other starting pitching candidates around the MLB world. The pitcher who I believe the Cubs will look to acquire is New York Mets starter Freddy Peralta.

Why Cubs will trade for Freddy Peralta

Peralta’s trade value is not especially high right now, as he has struggled in his first season with the New York Mets. Peralta is also set to enter free agency following the season. He is certainly a buy low trade candidate.

Buying low on Peralta is something the Cubs need to strongly consider. His track record suggests he can bounce back. Additionally, the Mets and Cubs already made a trade this season as well, as Chicago acquired left-handed pitcher David Peterson.

Peralta currently holds a 4.66 ERA across a league leading 20 starts. His strikeout rate and hard-hit percentage against are both well worse than his career averages. Yet, this is a pitcher who had a 2.70 ERA last season with the Milwaukee Brewers. The two-time All-Star recorded ERAs in the 2’s or 3’s in each season from 2021-2024 as well.

He is capable of bouncing back. The Cubs are surely aware of that fact.

Look for the Cubs to acquire Freddy Peralta from the Mets before the MLB trade deadline.
