The Texas Rangers continued their three-game series with the New York Yankees on Wednesday. Dropping the series opener 5-2, Texas fell to 25-24 on the season, which has them 3.5 games back of first place in the AL West.
While it has been an overall mediocre season for the Rangers, one bright spot has been switch-hitting catcher Jonah Heim. Entering Wednesday, Heim owned a career-high 112 OPS+ in 126 at-bats. This edged out his previous career-high 106 OPS+ in 2021 when he was an American League All-Star.
Unfortunately for Heim and the Rangers, he left Wednesday's contest early after suffering an apparent hand injury.
Catching a Ryan Yarbrough changeup off the end of the bat, Heim singled in the second inning before showing visible discomfort in his right hand. He stayed in the game to run the bases, but after attempting a throw down to second base before the next half-inning, he signaled to the dugout he needed to be replaced.
The Rangers have since announced an official update, revealing Heim was removed due to a compressed nerve in his right hand.

A right-handed thrower, Heim obviously needs that hand to do his job defensively behind the plate. Additionally, that is his bottom hand when hitting lefty, which would seemingly impact his swing as well.
On the season, Heim owns a .268 batting average with six home runs and 17 RBIs. His offensive production is critical for a Rangers team that ranks just 27th in MLB in runs and 26th in OPS.
