Rangers Hall of Famer Lands Coaching Job
USA TODAY Sports

One of the most beloved players in the history of the Texas Rangers is now a baseball coach not far from his exploits on the diamond.

Rusty Greer, a member of the franchise’s Hall of Fame since 2007, has been named the head high school baseball coach at Fort Worth Christian. The private school made the announcement on Twitter.

Greer endeared himself to Rangers fans for his all-out style of play, often putting his body in harm’s way for the betterment of the club. Greer played his entire MLB career as an outfielder for the Rangers from 1994-2002.

His near-careless style in center, which included running into walls and diving head-first for fly balls, earned him a reputation as a hard-nosed player and the love of a generation of Texas fans. Greer was on the field for basically every great moment in the first 10 seasons at The Ballpark in Arlington – the former home of the Rangers that underwent several name changes before the team moved to Globe Life Field.

Greer’s career included three American League West crowns, the franchise’s first home playoff game and the first perfect game in team history, thrown by Kenny Rogers. In fact, Greer’s fearless approach led to one of the seminal moments from that night as he ended the game by catching Gary DiSarcina’s fly ball for the final out.

Greer ended up hitting .305 with 119 home runs and 614 RBI over his nine-year career. He never reached the All-Star Game or won a Gold Glove, but his impact remains timeless.
