Ranking 2025's must-sign free-agent position players

With the World Series resuming Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, where the Dodgers hold a 3-1 lead, teams are already looking ahead to free agency — and the stakes are high.

Five days after the final out, clubs can officially start bidding, though they first have a brief, exclusive window to retain departing stars.

Among this year’s top free-agent position players, ranked by fWAR and excluding opt-outs, each brings serious value to a market where a 2-WAR season signals a solid everyday player. For teams seeking to elevate their rosters, these players offer the elite talent to reshape a team and push contenders over the top.

Juan Soto, OF – 14.2 fWAR

A generational talent, Soto’s value transcends even the best of his peers. At just 26, his fWAR places him among the most elite position players, reminiscent of Bryce Harper and Manny Machado at similar career points. This year, Soto’s postseason heroics for the Yankees only bolstered his case for a $500 million contract over 10 years or more, given his combination of youth and top-tier skill.

Alex Bregman, 3B – 8.6 fWAR

During its stretch of seven straight ALCS appearances, Houston's star third baseman comes off another solid season despite a rough start. He rebounded with a .288 average and 22 home runs over his final 94 games. He’s likely to draw serious interest despite a few years since his MVP-caliber 2018-19 stretch, where he averaged 36 homers and 108 RBI.

Willy Adames, SS – 8.0 fWAR

As the market’s top shortstop, Adames brings a rare mix of power and consistency. His 32 home runs and 112 RBI for Milwaukee in 2024 signal his offense is stronger than ever. Despite slight dips defensively this season, his position versatility and power should have multiple teams lining up.

Christian Walker, 1B – 6.8 fWAR

Even after missing 32 games with Arizona because of an oblique strain, Walker had another solid season, hitting 26 homers in 130 games. Known for his Gold Glove defense, he’s one of the few well-rounded first basemen available, though at 34, he may not command a lengthy deal.

Anthony Santander, OF – 5.9 fWAR

Santander timed his career year well, posting personal bests with 44 home runs and 102 RBI, which made him a first-time All-Star. Baltimore’s wealth of outfield prospects could mean he’ll find a new home despite his significant value.

Teoscar Hernandez, OF – 5.4 fWAR

After a few quieter seasons, Hernandez’s power returned in a big way for the Dodgers, as he racked up 33 home runs and 99 RBI with a .840 OPS. He’s likely seeking a long-term deal after turning down multiyear offers last season.

Gleyber Torres, 2B – 5.3 fWAR

A second baseman with pop is a rarity on the market, and Torres’s late-season turnaround solidified his value. His five home runs and 18 RBI over his final 31 games gave the Yankees’ lineup an extra punch, and he’s a strong candidate to leave the Bronx.

Pete Alonso, 1B – 5.0 fWAR

Alonso’s power remains his most significant draw. The Mets’ slugger hit 34 homers in 2024, 15 of which came after the All-Star break. His postseason success, including being a game-winner against the Brewers, will give him a name to watch as he enters the market.

Tyler O'Neill, OF – 3.1 fWAR

A change of scenery revitalized O’Neill’s power with the Red Sox, where he belted 31 homers and posted an .847 OPS. His injury history could keep teams cautious, but his upside remains high.

Jurickson Profar, LF – 2.7 fWAR

Profar’s one-year deal with the Padres may have been one of 2024’s best bargains. His 24 homers and 85 RBI highlighted a breakout season, likely leading to a heftier contract this offseason.
