The Tampa Bay Rays made a roster decision Saturday, strengthening their bullpen ahead of their second game of a three-game series vs. the San Francisco Giants at Tropicana Field.
The Rays reinstated left-hander Garrett Cleavinger from the 15-day injured list after right calf tightness had sidelined him since late March. His return gives manager Kevin Cash another southpaw while adding needed flexibility to the Rays’ late-inning relief mix.
To create room on the active roster, the Rays designated right-hander Yoendrys Gomez for assignment. The move leaves Gomez exposed to waivers, though he could remain in the organization if he clears and accepts a minor league assignment.
Cleavinger’s activation marks the completion of a steady recovery process. He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham on April 19 and worked his way back toward game readiness before rejoining the major league bullpen.
MLB.TV’s Ryan Bass shared the official update on X, formerly known as Twitter, confirming the transactions just hours before first pitch.
“The Rays have reinstated LHP Garrett Cleavinger (right calf tightness) from the 15-day IL. To make room on the active roster, RHP Yoendrys Gómez has been designated for assignment.”

The move gives Tampa Bay a stronger matchup option against a Giants lineup that tests bullpen depth. Cleavinger’s return also allows Cash to manage the late innings more aggressively, particularly in left-on-left situations and high-leverage spots that demand swing-and-miss ability.
As the season develops, the Rays continue to manage health, roster depth, and performance. With Tampa Bay trying to stay competitive in a tight division race, each transaction carries added importance.
This move reflects a clear organizational approach. Improve the bullpen now while preserving as much roster flexibility as possible for the weeks ahead.
