Rays sign former All-Star reliever David Robertson

The Tampa Bay Rays signed former All-Star relief pitcher David Robertson to a major league contract, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The financial terms of the deal are unclear.

Robertson most recently played for Team USA at this summer's Tokyo Olympics. However, he hasn't appeared in a major league game since 2019, when he was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Robertson struck out four, walked three and recorded two saves in three appearances for the Americans, who won silver, in Japan.

The veteran right-hander owns a 53-33 record with a 2.90 ERA, 1.154 WHIP and 137 saves in 12 MLB seasons with the Phillies, New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.

To create a roster spot for Robertson, the Rays transferred Jeffrey Springs to the 60-day injured list.

Tampa Bay currently leads the American League East with a 71-47 record, three games ahead of the second-place Boston Red Sox. The Rays open a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles Monday at Tropicana Field.
