Recent Report is Damning for Anthony Volpe

This is an indictment of Anthony Volpe. “Outside executives say the Yankees still have interest in obtaining a player offering something from the buffet of defense, righty hitting and/or speed.”

He is supposed to be the young, fast, defensive wizard at shortstop who can also hit at the top of the lineup. That has not been the case so far. 

Having this exact type of player on the roster already tells me they are looking for a short-term fix. Volpe is way too young for them to be ready to give up on him. Having more support could take some of the pressure off his shoulders and give him someone else to learn from.

After already trading for multiple hitters and Clarke Schmidt going down, it makes a ton of sense for the team to go after pitching help. But during trade deadline season, rumors like these do not come out of nowhere. 

In ESPN’s most up-to-date ranking of players that should be available right now, none of them seemed to fit this billing. Many of the bats are lefties or outfielders. 

If the Yankees are going to try and swing another trade, it could be a player completely off the radar. Fans might not expect the young bat they find, but insiders or rival execs might not be expecting the pitching help they snag, if that is the route they go.

There are only a few days left. It feels like another deal is going to get done, but it is anybody’s guess where the Yankees direct their attention.

No matter what else happens during deadline season this year, the Yankees looking for a better version of Volpe while he is right here should send shock waves through his camp.
