When the Boston Red Sox signed star shortstop Trevor Story to a six-year, $140 million contract in 2022, they envisioned that his swing would translate well at Fenway Park to go along with his already stellar defense.
However, due to near-constant injuries, Story has been limited to just 163 games over his first three seasons with Boston. In 2023, right elbow surgery sidelined him until August, and a dislocated shoulder last April limited him to just 26 games in 2024.
In 2025, however, Story is proving just how much of an impact his presence in the lineup has when he's healthy.
Story had his best performance of the season in the Red Sox' 3-1 win over the White Sox Sunday, going 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a two-run double, driving in all three of Boston's runs.
Story has started the season with a .308 batting average and .805 OPS, and has given Red Sox fans reason to believe in his stature as a more-than-productive hitter.
The 32-year-old's offensive performance was overlooked by Garrett Crochet's near-no-hitter, but Story almost singlehandedly helped Boston avoid a crushing sweep to the lowly White Sox. The rest of the Red Sox lineup went 6-for-31 with no extra base-hits.
The Red Sox' lineup has been struggling as of late, and Sunday's game was the seventh straight game with four runs or fewer scored. The team improved to 8-9 and turn their attention to a three-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.
For now, though, Story should hopefully keep mashing, which would do wonders for the struggling Red Sox offense.
