Red Sox Announce Roster Move Amid First Base Controversy

González has only played in 192 games over his five-year MLB career with the Red Sox and Chicago White Sox, but has performed admirably in a fill-in role. The 28-year-old has a .308 batting average, a .785 OPS, a 120 OPS+, and three stolen bases over 17 games this season.

Hopefully, for Boston, he can maintain those numbers upon returning from a quad contusion. Campbell is young enough and athletic enough to mold his defensive mind into a first baseman. However, he is a natural second baseman and, in an ideal world, can remain there.

One potential option for the Red Sox is a platoon. Despite hitting from the right side, González has much better numbers against righties than lefties. He is batting .333 with a .828 OPS versus a .263 batting average and .707 OPS facing southpaws.

Abraham Toro, a switch-hitter, is also better against right-handed pitching, but his plate versatility could potentially ease González’s workload.

Casas is still the future of the position in Boston, and it feels unlikely that one player replicates his value. However, at 29-32 and 8.5 games back of the first-place New York Yankees, the Red Sox may feel the need to hit the trade market for an immediate upgrade.
