Red Sox Announce Willson Contreras News After Leaving Twins Game

The Boston Red Sox have not had many bright spots this season as they have stumbled to a 6-10 record through their first 16 games. One of the few consistent performers has been first baseman Willson Contreras.

Contreras arrived this past winter in a trade with the rebuilding St. Louis Cardinals and remains under team control through the 2027 season.

The 33-year-old has lived up to expectations so far, posting a .304 batting average, .443 on-base percentage, .943 OPS, three home runs and 11 RBIs across his first 16 games. The three-time All-Star has kept Boston’s lineup from sinking even further.

During Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins, everything went wrong for Boston. Minnesota jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, and by the bottom of the fifth inning, Contreras had been removed from the game.

Andruw Monasterio took over at first base and in his cleanup spot in the batting order. Contreras finished the day 0-for-1, reaching once after being hit by a pitch.

Unfortunately, that hit by pitch came in the lower back in the top of the fourth inning, and it ultimately forced his exit from the contest. The Red Sox announced moments later that Contreras left with lower back tightness (h/t Tim Healey of the Boston Globe).

It is an unfortunate development for Boston, especially with their next best option at first base, Triston Casas, still sidelined on the 60-day injured list. The Red Sox cannot afford to lose Contreras for an extended period, particularly given how well he has been producing and how thin the roster already is.

Contreras’ status will be monitored closely, and the team is expected to provide further updates as Wednesday’s series finale against the Twins approaches. His availability will be critical as the Red Sox try to avoid falling deeper into an early-season hole.
