Red Sox Avoid Embarrassing Rafael Devers Situation Against Giants

As the Boston Red Sox head out west, they will have to face Rafael Devers on his new team, the San Francisco Giants. During the press conference with the Giants, Devers and the Giants announced he'd begin learning how to play first base.

With a chance to embarrass the Red Sox by playing first base against them in his first series against his former team, it doesn't seem likely. According to CBS Sports reporter Julian McWilliams on X, the Giants don't plan on having Devers make his debut at first base during the Red Sox series.

The Red Sox are spared from an embarrassing situation, as Devers is unlikely to play first base for the Giants. If he had trotted out to first during this series, there would be a lot more drama and fuel added to the fire.

A large part of why Devers was traded away in the first place was his unwillingness to learn how to play first base for the Red Sox. Things were heightened once Triston Casas went down with an injury, and the rest snowballed from there.

Boston, now without the best hitter on their team, is in the middle of a strong streak of wins. They have rebounded from a tough start and are in solid shape in their division.

But, even if they are in solid shape, seeing Devers play where he refused to against the Red Sox would've been embarrassing for the Red Sox organization.

Fortunately, whether it's the Giants taking their time, Devers not being up to speed, or another reason, that embarrassing situation is unlikely to come to pass.

While there's still a small chance he slots in there, the Giants are seemingly going to wait to play Devers at first until, at the earliest, after the Red Sox series.
