It's impossible to get a feel for what the Boston Red Sox might do at the trade deadline at the end of July. Prior to July 31, the Red Sox will have to turn things around if they want to buy.
Frankly, even if they play a decent month of baseball, there might not be much of a reason for the Red Sox to buy.
Unless they can make a massive move, Boston simply isn't that good. Currently three games back in the American League Wild Card and 3-7 in their last 10, the Red Sox aren't in a position to do much. However, when discussing what they might do, CBO Craig Breslow provided some information about the Red Sox's plan.
“Money alone isn’t the only way to get players, but the flexibility does give us the ability to take on contracts and take on players,” Breslow said, per NESN. “We intend to be aggressive in looking for upgrades. We also have a really deep farm system and the ability to trade from that system to help our big league team.”
The Red Sox have one of the best farm systems in Major League Baseball, and if they're willing to part ways with some of those players, there's a good chance they'll get better.
However, it also might not be the best idea for them to move players in their farm system right now. Unless the Red Sox plan to compete in the second half and believe they have an opportunity to do so, it's better to allow these young players to develop in the minors or the big leagues for now.
