The Boston Red Sox have been one of the hottest teams in baseball over the past month, entering Sunday’s series finale against the Houston Astros riding a four-game win streak and holding one of the league’s best records since the start of July.

Now sitting at 61–51 and having jumped the New York Yankees for second place in the AL East, the Red Sox are gaining momentum—but Sunday brought concerning news about one of their brightest young stars.

Rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer, who’s been sidelined with a sprained wrist, may be facing a more serious situation than initially expected. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Mayer’s injury is “more serious than the Red Sox initially envisioned,” and season-ending surgery is now on the table.

The potential procedure would be a significant setback for both Marcelo Mayer and the organization, as the highly touted prospect is viewed as a key piece of Boston’s future.

Mayer was the No. 4 overall pick back in 2021 and when he signed with the Red Sox garnered a signing bonus of $6.6 million along with signing a one-year, $760,000 contract with the team for the 2025 season.

He was officially called up on May 24 and has been quite effective both as an infielder and in the batters box as he still tries to develop and adjust to the MLB level along with fellow rookie Roman Anthony, who recently hit his first career walk-off hit on Friday against the Astros.

Across 127 at bats this season, Mayer is batting .228 with 29 hits, four homers, 10 RBI's, and has mainlined a .674 OPS.
