Red Sox Executive Discusses Timeline for Roman Anthony's Call-Up

Kristian Campbell has rightfully earned the admiration of the Boston Red Sox and their fans in the early goings of his rookie season. The second baseman/center fielder is off to a hot start at the plate and has already signed an eight-year, $60 million contract to help solidify the Red Sox’s future.

However, Campbell is not the only top prospect looking to make a name for himself in the majors. Boston’s No. 1 prospect, outfielder Roman Anthony, will eventually make his highly anticipated debut this summer.

It’s a matter of when, not if.

Here’s what Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow had to say on Anthony, via Chris Cotillo of Mass Live:

“There are certain players, and we’re hopeful and optimistic that we have a handful of those, who create their own timeline,” Breslow said. “But then, the bulk of guys who get to the big leagues do so because an opportunity arises on the big league club. I think that this will likely be some balance of both these things.”

Anthony’s current path to everyday playing time is a bit murky. The Red Sox boast a deep, talented outfield including Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela, Rob Refsnyder, and upon his return from injury, Masataka Yoshida.

When fully healthy, Boston has five legitimate options for three spots, especially since Rafael Devers seems poised to take most of the reps at designated hitter.

There is no point in letting Anthony rot on the bench. Until there is an opening, whether that be due to injury or poor performance, the 2022 second-round draft pick will remain in Triple-A Worcester.

Anthony has struggled with his contact (.167 batting average), but has demonstrated his elite power with an .808 OPS and two home runs through his first nine games. He also has a more than respectable 10 to 13 walk-to-strikeout ratio.

While it’s unclear exactly when Anthony will arrive for the Red Sox, he could very well take a similar path to Campbell, where if he bursts onto the scene, he could have a long-term deal sooner rather than later.
