With the trade deadline approaching on July 31, the Boston Red Sox will have a decision to make with outfielder Jarren Duran.
There have been rumors over the past month suggesting that Duran could be traded, with the San Diego Padres and other teams reportedly interested.
Duran, who has proven to be one of the better players on the Red Sox over the past few years, clearly isn't having the season that he's been hoping for. The left-handed hitting outfielder has already admitted to that, hitting just .252 with five home runs.
However, after his impressive campaign a year ago, hitting .285 with 21 home runs and a 131 OPS+, there's reason to believe that he’ll figure things out.
He hasn't been great over the past year and a half, but he's still a decent player and somebody the Red Sox would likely want to have. Still, some don't believe that's the case, including 98.5 The Sports Hub out in Boston, which suggested that he's the one who will likely be the odd man out.
“But at age 28, Duran is in his prime and right in line for his last big payday on his next contract.
“It doesn't look like that contract will come with the Red Sox, who prioritized signing Kristian Campbell before the start of the 2025 season and are now looking to make room for Roman Anthony to become an everyday major-leaguer. At the moment, Anthony-Ceddanne Rafaela-Wilyer Abreu feels like the Red Sox' outfield of the future, leaving Duran on the outside looking in,” they said.
Duran could use another contract, with him set to hit arbitration again at the end of the year.
If the Red Sox want to move on from him, it might be better to do it now.
Depending on what the package is, there's a reason to believe it might not be the worst idea, either.
