Red Sox fastest since 2001 to 100 wins

The Boston Red Sox are the best team in baseball. So it’s no surprise that they’re the first team to 100 wins this season. But more than that, they’re the fastest team since the 2001 Seattle Mariners to reach the mark. And, it’s the first Red Sox team to achieve 100 wins since 1946.

“Somebody just told me it’s been done three times here and the last one was 70-something years ago,” Mitch Moreland said via ESPN following the win. “I think that speaks for itself.”

That’s how good this team is. And when it comes to Boston’s history, this particular team needs just six more wins to break another record. The franchise-record of 105 wins, set all the way back in 1912. That said, 100 wins isn’t the end-all. With the playoffs right around the corner, the Red Sox only have one goal in mind.

“Don’t get me wrong; 100 is 100. But we’ve got bigger goals, obviously,” manager Alex Cora says. “Today we got closer to one of those goals.”

Now, if the Red Sox go 10-6 the rest of the way, Cora will break the mark set by Ralph Houk (1961, Yankees) for manager wins by a rookie. In the meantime, Boston holds a 10-game lead over the Yankees for first in the AL East. They have an eight-game lead over the Houston Astros for the best record in the league.
