Red Sox Haven’t Opened Contract Talks With Team’s Best Player This Season
USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox have been on an up-and-down cycle this 2025 season, as well as some of their superstars.

One player who has been among the most consistent and explosive players through 20 games this season is right fielder Wilyer Abreu. From the first game of the season, Abreu has been one of the most reliable and clutch players for the Red Sox.

There were concerns about him starting the season well, as he endured a gastrointestinal virus. The lack of complete preparation hasn’t slowed him down, however, as he has been better than many have expected.

In 20 games played, Abreu has accounted for a batting average of .306, a team-high on-base percentage of .427, and a slugging percentage of .532. He has also accounted for a team-high 13 runs, 19 hits, five double-base hits, three home runs, 12 RBIs, 33 total bases, 13 walks, and 18 strikeouts in only 62 at-bats.

Abreu is currently on a one-year, $780,000 deal and is potentially an All-Star candidate. While players like veteran pitcher Garrett Crochet (six years; $170 million) and rookie second baseman Kristian Campbell (eight years; $60 million) earned extensions with the Red Sox shortly after the season started, Abreu is yet to get an extension.

ESPN reporter Enrique Rojas states that the Red Sox haven’t offered Abreu a contract extension to stay on the team. Considering that the Red Sox have been attempting to lock down Crochet isn’t a surprise, but the team was more than quick to offer big money to a rookie.

The Red Sox might be looking for a longer form of consistency before they give Abreu a longer, more expensive deal. In the meantime, the Red Sox aren’t close to offering one of their best players this season a deal yet.
