After signing an eight-year, $60 million deal in the early stages of the season, Boston Red Sox young star Kristian Campbell has played at a very high level.
If anything, it looks like the Red Sox might’ve gotten off cheap, something they shouldn't be complaining about.
In his first 30 games throughout his MLB career, Campbell is hitting .290 with four home runs, eight doubles, 12 RBI, and 19 walks. He's posted an above-average 145 OPS+ and has played decently defensively in the infield.
Despite signing that extension during the offseason, ESPN Insider Jeff Passan eventually linked him to a new deal, writing that he could be somebody looking at a deal over $200 million.
"It's odd to include a player who signed an extension a month ago, but 22-year-old Campbell's bat is that special. Boston has him locked up for the next eight years at $60 million with two club options on top of that, which means if he makes it to free agency, Campbell will be 32 on Opening Day in ... 2035.
"If he is what the Red Sox think he is, though, chances are they'll try to make him a one-uniform player before then -- and that would be a $200 million-plus proposition," he wrote.
While Campbell looks to be somebody who will eventually deserve that type of payday, it's nothing the Red Sox have to worry about too much right now.
At the very least, they have him locked up for the next eight seasons. When the time comes, they could be looking at a huge deal.
By then, much could be different within the organization.
