Well, when a team starts to struggle, the fan base and everybody around it begin to as well.
The Boston Red Sox haven’t played great baseball this year, and at some point, that's exactly what has to be said.
It's only so long for the Red Sox to figure things out, and while it's still a bit too early to press the panic button on the year, the past two seasons just haven't gone the Red Sox's way, and there's no question about that.
Losing another game on Wednesday, the Red Sox sit at 27-31 and need to figure out many things.
Chad Finn of The Boston Globe believes there are some significant decisions to be made in the next few weeks, including the future of Trevor Story, Marcelo Mayer, and Kristian Campbell.
“Also, it’s time to give some stability to the kids. Mayer plays shortstop, not second or third, even if that means designating Story for assignment. It’s sad, but it’s time to stop trying to wring something out of him that is no longer there, and perhaps never was in states other than Colorado.
“While they’re at it, stop taking advantage of Kristian Campbell’s earnestness and end this first base experiment... He probably would be best served by going back to Worcester, catching his breath, and hammering some Triple A pitching for a few weeks,” he wrote.
Campbell has struggled recently, but sending him to Triple-A might not do too much, either.
Regarding Mayer and Story, he hit those right on the nose.
There's no reason why Story should be taking at-bats away from anybody at this point, especially from someone like Mayer.
The Red Sox must either commit fully to a youth movement or try something else.
What they're doing in between clearly isn't working, and it might only get worse.
