Red Sox Linked to Deal for Former Fan Favorite to Help Carlos Narvaez

Sneakily, the Boston Red Sox could use some help behind the plate. It isn't that Carlos Narvaez hasn't been excellent this season, but asking him to catch every single day isn’t a recipe for success in the short or long term.

The Red Sox clearly have something with Narvaez, who has played much better than many were expecting entering the campaign.

Searching for potential options for the Red Sox to pursue ahead of the trade deadline on July 31, MassLive recently linked them to a former Red Sox player in the form of Christian Vazquez. Vazquez, who isn't a great offensive player, would at least be serviceable for Boston as it looks to eat innings behind the plate in the back end of the campaign.

“Wong would likely be hitting better if he was an everyday player in a routine and he might break out again if he gets traded and gets that opportunity. For now, though, he represents an offensive black hole when he plays and a contending team may want to upgrade,” they wrote.

“One name to watch? Old friend Christian Vázquez, who is also not hitting (.170 average, .492 OPS) but has some intangibles the Red Sox like. The Twins would probably trade him in a salary dump.”

The expectation around Major League Baseball is that the Minnesota Twins will sell some.

Considering the Twins aren't in the greatest position to make massive changes or make the postseason, it's likely a better decision to move on from players like Vazquez. If they want to hold on to some of their young talent, that'd make sense, but Vasquez doesn't fit that mold.
