Red Sox OF Jarren Duran shares what happened on his costly Game 2 blunder

Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran made a mistake on Wednesday night that may have cost his team a chance to advance to the ALDS, and he held himself accountable after the game.

The New York Yankees beat the Red Sox 4-3 in Game 2 of the American League Wild Card series between the two teams at Yankee Stadium. The game was tied 2-2 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Aaron Judge came to the plate with a runner on second.

Judge hit weak line drive to left field off the end of his bat. The ball was sinking fast, but Duran got a good jump and looked like he was going to make the catch. He appeared to overrun the ball instead, which caused it to bounce off his glove.

Trent Grisham was running on contact with two outs, so he was able to score from second easily to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead.

Duran takes responsibility for the miscue

The play was scored as a hit, but it was a ball that most people would agree Duran should have caught. The outfielder thought so as well.

"I was just playing pretty deep on Judge, and as I was coming in, I thought it was hit a little harder than it was, and then I kind of gained more ground than I thought," Duran explained after the game. "I didn't really have to go into a full dive there and kind of just pushed the ball on myself a little more. Kind of got really up on me. It’s on me."

The drop helped the Yankees force Game 3

The Yankees lost Game 1 of the series following a highly questionable pitching decision from manager Aaron Boone. They took an early 2-0 lead on Wednesday night, but the Red Sox quickly battled back to tie the game in the third inning. Trevor Story then hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game again following Duran's outfield blunder.

While there is no way of knowing whether Duran's drop cost the Red Sox the game, it certainly made life easier on the Yankees. The Red Sox made another brutal mistake late in the game on a play where they should have scored a run. Still, Duran will feel even worse about his mistake if Boston cannot get the job done in Game 3.
