The Boston Red Sox placed left fielder Andrew Benintendi on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday due to a strained right rib cage.
As Ian Browne of the club's official website explained, the 26-year-old outfielder lost his footing while attempting to travel from first base to third in the bottom of the eighth inning of Tuesday's game versus the Tampa Bay Rays. Benintendi was tagged out and suffered injury to insult in the process.
Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke confirmed that X-rays on Benintendi showed no broken bones. He'll undergo further evaluations.
Boston recalled right-handed pitcher Ryan Weber and will assign Weber to the bullpen as Benintendi recovers.
The last 24 hours serve as the latest chapter of a nightmare start of a pandemic-shortened campaign for Benintendi. Over 14 games, he hit a woeful .103 with no home runs, a single RBI, four hits, and 17 strikeouts.
