Red Sox Predicted to Land Power Hitter With 53 Home Runs

In ESPN's latest mock draft , where MLB insiders make the picks, the Boston Red Sox are predicted to land Andrew Fischer 34th overall, a corner infielder from the University of Tennessee.

Kiley McDaniel of ESPN says Fischer combines advanced power and plate discipline, making him an ideal fit for Boston’s youth movement.

"Fischer is getting buzz all over the 20s and also likely won't last this long [34] on draft day," McDaniel said.

In 271 at-bats with Tennessee this season, Fischer hit .341 with a monster .497 on-base percentage. He racked up 25 homers (good for third in NCAA DI), 65 RBIs, and 63 walks across 65 games played. Oh, and his OPS was a whopping 1.257.

"Fischer's signature tool is his plus power that works to all fields, the product of a left-handed swing with bat speed and loft," MLB.com's prospect profile says. "He showed that he can launch balls in the air with wood bats last summer in the Cape Cod League."

His ability to dominate in arguably the best conference in college baseball (SEC) could put the 21-year-old higher on many draft boards than where the Red Sox are being projected to take him, 34th overall. After all, MLB.com's prospect rankings for the upcoming draft have Fischer ranked 29th.

With Triston Casas injured, it remains to be seen where Fischer would land with a healthy lineup. The Tennessee product can play either corner infield spot and could even be a designated hitter if his hitting develops to that level. The addition of Fischer would bring a big-time power bat to Boston sooner than some may think.
