Red Sox Predicted to Land Recent Cy Young Winner in Blockbuster Trade

The Boston Red Sox are a team on the rise, trading for White Sox ace Garrett Crochet and inking Alex Bregman to a three-year deal among other moves aimed at ending their three-year streak of finishing .500 or worse.

On the flipside, the Miami Marlins are a team in a near continuous rebuild, having traded Marcell Ozuna, Christian Yelich, Giancarlo Stanton, Tanner Scott, Jazz Chisholm Jr and Luis Arraez in the span of seven years.

One of the faces of the Marlins right now is 2022 Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara, set to return to dominance after his second Tommy John surgery shelved him all of 2024.

Alcantara threw one inning in Spring Training, allowing one hit but topping 99 mph as he gears up for his fifth career Opening Day start.

With five years and $56 million left on his contract, the Marlins were adamant in keeping Alcantara this offseason as they hope an influx of young talent will vault them into contention.

However, Bleacher Report writer Kerry Miller thinks Alcantara will be traded to the Boston Red Sox at the trade deadline.

“The Miami Marlins were adamant from the outset that they had no intentions of trading away Sandy Alcántara this offseason, and they have thus far stuck by that," wrote Miller, adding that they likely took this stance to avoid “lowball offers for a recent Cy Young winner who is coming off of an even more recent Tommy John surgery.”

A number of developments could make an Alcantara trade to Boston more likely, including a superb first half that leads to an offer the Marlins can’t ignore, or a team like the Red Sox being dealt injuries to rotation pieces like Walker Buehler or Lucas Giolito.

Alcantara has a 2.89 ERA in 16 career appearances against AL East teams, so a trade for the former Cy Young might be what boosts the Red Sox to contention in a stacked division.
