The Boston Red Sox will have a decision to make with shortstop Trevor Story, who was once one of the better players in Major League Baseball.
After signing a six-year, $140 million deal, Story hasn't been the player the Red Sox were hoping for, whether due to injuries or playing at a below-average level when he's on the field.
Having yet to appear in more than 94 games for the Red Sox in his first four seasons with the team, he also hasn't posted higher than a 105 OPS+.
With multiple prospects ready to come up in the near future, the Red Sox could be in a position to either get rid of him or make him change positions.
Given where the first base position stands for the Red Sox, there could be a scenario where they move him there. With Rafael Devers refusing to play first, that's where this could come into play.
Regardless, however, Jacob Mountz of Yardbarker believes there will be a change for the veteran.
“Mayer has been a prized gem in the Red Sox farm system since they drafted him in 2021. With his arrival imminent, the infield is due for a shuffle. What does this mean for Story?...
“With Mayer ready to enter a packed infield, it would appear logical if Story was next in line for the open first base position. However, this will also depend on the promotion of Roman Anthony and the return of Masataka Yoshida, which may shuffle the roster in an unpredictable manner,” he wrote.
If the plan is to have Marcelo Mayer in the big leagues sometime in the near future, it makes sense to move Story. There's no reason to bring Mayer up unless the Red Sox guarantee him every day at-bats, and that needs to be at his primary position.
At this point, Story is nowhere good enough to suggest holding a prospect in Triple-A.
