The Boston Red Sox have to add more starting pitching to their rotation if they want to compete in 2025 and beyond. One of the areas where they could add that starter is in the trade market.
Boston, along with a lot of other contending teams, will also be interested in acquiring a top starter. They'll have competition, but with the money freed up from the Rafael Devers trade, they can maneuver the trade market better than most contending teams.
One pitcher the Red Sox are predicted to target is Milwaukee Brewers All-Star pitcher Freddy Peralta. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com named multiple players that the Red Sox should target, and Peralta was one of those names mentioned.
“Whether it’s Sandy Alcantara, Zach Eflin, Tyler Anderson, Andrew Heaney, Zack Littell, or Freddy Peralta in the rotation… pitching will be moving before July 31.”
Feinsand predicts that some of these pitchers will be on the move. For the Red Sox, Peralta being on the move, and to Boston, would be an ideal scenario. Of the names listed, he's the most intriguing.
The 29-year-old has an $8 million club option in 2026 left on his deal, which the Red Sox would likely take. Or, with the money freed up from trading Devers, could offer him a lucrative extension.
One of the main reasons why the Red Sox are predicted to go after Peralta is not just because the Brewers are considering shopping him, it's how great he's been great in 2025. Peralta, in 16 starts for the Brewers, has a 2.76 ERA and a 7-4 record.
In 88 innings pitched, Peralta has struck out 990 batters and walked 34. According to ERA+, his 2025 season so far is his second-best season, next to only 2021, when he was an All-Star and finished with a 2.81 ERA in 27 starts.
With the money freed up from Devers, Peralta, who's looking for a new deal, could get what he wants from the Red Sox. Other teams interested in him might not be able to offer such a nice extension from the beginning.
Boston, with hundreds of millions freed up post-Devers trade, can offer Peralta a big extension. While Peralta doesn't have a no-trade clause, the Brewers would be more likely to do right by their long-time starter.
The Red Sox's acquiring Peralta is a great fit for everyone involved. Milwaukee gets prospects, the Red Sox find their starter, and Peralta would be in line for a huge deal.
