It may not be too long until the Boston Red Sox debut their new catcher.

Speaking with reporters ahead of their game against the Athletics on Friday, interim manager Chad Tracy announced that Adley Rutschman (wrist) could begin a rehab assignment this weekend.

Boston acquired the backstop in a blockbuster deal with the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, but he has been on the injured list since July 20 with a wrist injury. Rutschman has been on the IL three times already this season. Aside from his current wrist injury, he missed 10 games earlier in the year for Baltimore due to left ankle inflammation, as well as eight more games with a concussion.

Across 67 games this season, the 28-year-old is batting .251/.331/.433 with eight home runs, 47 RBI and a .764 OPS.

Rutschman's pending debut with the Red Sox could not have come at a better time. The Red Sox have undoubtedly been the best team in baseball over the last month. They have gone 32-8 over their last 40 games and extended their winning streak to eight games after a thrilling 12-11 win in 13 innings over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. This current winning streak also comes after Boston tied a franchise record by winning 15 games in a row.

They're now a season-best 12 games over .500 at 63-51 and currently hold the second Wild Card spot in the American League. The Red Sox are also only five games out of first place in the AL East.

Tracy also announced that outfielder Roman Anthony is progressing well from his injury, with the young outfielder hitting off a machine. Anthony has been on the shelf since early May with a partially torn right ring finger.

If all goes well in this stage of Anthony's rehab, the next step for the 22-year-old would be hitting off a Trajekt machine and then facing live pitching. Tracy expects Anthony to be back by the playoffs.

The Red Sox will look to run their win streak to nine games away on Friday when they welcome the aforementioned Athletics to Fenway Park.
