The Boston Red Sox are in a position, but they aren't in the worst. Of course, every year this team doesn't compete for a World Series is viewed as a disappointment given the expectations from the fan base, and the Red Sox simply just being a much better team than they're playing.
Still, they have one of the better farm systems in Major League Baseball, and if they're still willing to spend money over the next few years, Boston should find a way to be in a position to win a World Series again.
But what the Red Sox do at the trade deadline could be telling, and according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, there's a possibility that they could move on from three big-time names. He listed Jarren Duran, Aroldis Chapman, and Walker Buehler as potential options. Moving on from Duran would be the toughest out of the mix, given his age, but there's some value in trading him if the Red Sox don't plan to sign him to a long-term extension in the near future.
"Should the Red Sox sell, some intriguing names could enter the fray, most notably Jarren Duran, Aroldis Chapman, Walker Buehler,” he wrote.
Regarding Chapman and Buhler, moving on from them wouldn't be too difficult.
Chapman is throwing the baseball at an excellent level again, which he’s done for nearly his entire career. However, he's on a one-year deal, so there isn't much reason to keep him around.
Regarding Buehler, his numbers speak for themselves. He's been terrible, something the Red Sox weren't expecting when they signed him.
