The Boston Red Sox have several exciting young prospects on the cusp of the majors. If the front office has its way, those players will be staying with the Red Sox for the foreseeable future.
According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox are interested in discussing extensions with their top prospects. Speier specifically listed outfielder Roman Anthony, infielder Kristian Campbell and shortstop Marcelo Mayer as prospects the Red Sox want to extend. Campbell, in particular, is reportedly interested in a long-term deal to stay in Boston.
Anthony, a consensus top-100 prospect in 2024, was rated as the top prospect in baseball by Baseball America. He has been lauded for his knack for making hard contact, knowledge of the zone and plus power. Anthony displayed his all-around potential last season, producing a .291/.396/.498 batting line in 540 plate appearances between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting 18 homers and 32 doubles while stealing 21 bases.
Mayer, the seventh overall prospect per MLB.com, appeared in just 77 Double-A games due to a myriad of injuries. While his durability is in question, as is his future defensive home, there is no doubting his potential. Mayer is regarded as a solid overall hitter with enough offensive potential to handle third base. He is lauded for his instincts on the diamond, allowing him to make up for any shortcomings in his quickness.
Campbell, ranked as the 10th-best prospect by MLB.com, has been more of a utility player in the minors, seeing time at second, short and center. He is considered to have plus speed and raw power, although he has not fully been able to tap into his tools. There are also questions as to his defensive future as he has not displayed an instinctual feel for any position on the diamond. However, he showed his potential in 2024, posting a .330/.439/.558 batting line in 517 plate appearances across three levels, hitting 20 homers and 32 doubles while stealing 24 bases. The Red Sox will find a place for Campbell if he continues that level of production.
The Red Sox have three of the top 10 prospects in baseball. They may not be going anywhere anytime soon.
