Red Sox See Top Prospect Franklin Arias Jump Into the Top 10 in Latest Rankings
USA Today Sports

The Boston Red Sox might be mired in exhaustive talk about top prospect Roman Anthony , but quietly, another prospect has been making waves in the system. That prospect is shortstop Franklin Arias. In fact, he’s made so much noise that one of the standards for prospect rankings, Keith Law of the Athletic, has jumped him into the top 10 of his most recent rankings. He sits at No. 8, compared to a preseason ranking of No. 42.

Franklin Arias Lighting Up the Minors

It’s not a secret that the Red Sox have a wealth of position players in the minors. Between recently called-up Marcelo Mayer , Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, and more, the farm system is teeming with position player depth. It’s exactly what you want out of a farm system.

Arias, 19, is currently sitting in High-A Greenville. Coming out of Venezuela, he was initially viewed as a defense-first prospect. That perception has changed as he has progressed and continues to show no signs of slowing down. He’s hitting .351/.396/.5117 in 22 games at High-A. He’s stolen three bases, popped two home runs with seven doubles.

Keith Law writes that Arias is what one would consider a true shortstop. He gives the Red Sox another immediate top 10 prospect after Kristian Campbell graduated this season.

Positional Outlook for Arias

After playing at both second base and shortstop in the minors so far, Franklin Arias has seemingly settled into a full-time shortstop role. He’s played four games at second base since arriving in High-A. He has five games logged at second base vs. 31 at shortstop this season across all of his minor league stops.

Positions tend to work themselves out as players make their way through the minors and age, but it seems that the Red Sox might have a huge talent coming up in the system that can take over at shortstop in a couple of years. According to MLB Pipeline, he’s estimated to reach the big league club in 2027. The future is certainly bright in Boston, even if the current team is having plenty of struggles.
