Red Sox Set to Unveil Controversial New City Connect Uniform

The Boston Red Sox are adding a bold new look to their wardrobe for the 2025 season, introducing a fresh City Connect jersey that may stir debate among fans. The new design is expected to feature a shade of green that ties directly to the iconic Green Monster in left field at Fenway Park.

Team president Sam Kennedy hinted that the new jersey would be a significant departure from tradition by calling it "controversial," but urged fans to give it a fair shot. While the entire design hasn’t been revealed, the color scheme alone has been enough to ignite conversation among loyal supporters.

“They will be controversial and I think you’re on the right track in terms of the color scheme you mentioned,” Kennedy said on MassLive’s “Fenway Rundown” podcast

“… I will say, though, nothing can be more controversial than bright yellow and those were probably among the most popular things we’ve ever done. So, I would say give them a chance.”

This isn’t the team’s first venture into unconventional uniforms. In 2021, the Red Sox debuted their yellow and blue City Connect jerseys, inspired by the Boston Marathon. Despite the initial shock, those jerseys became favorites, especially with a 35-13 record while wearing them.

The green uniform joins a rotation that includes Boston’s traditional home whites, gray road uniforms, and red alternates. However, the Blue Road alternate jersey will be retired from the rotation to keep the yellow 2021 City Connect uniforms.

While the new jersey’s full unveiling date hasn’t been announced, the Red Sox continue pushing boundaries in how they connect with fans—especially younger generations. The new design follows a broader trend across MLB, where teams experiment with color, local themes, and bold aesthetics.

Boston uniforms aren’t new in green. The team previously wore green jerseys during spring training to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, a tradition that ended in 2023. However, this new City Connect version is expected to be more permanent and symbolic.

As the Red Sox prepare for the upcoming season with an upgraded roster and playoff aspirations, the controversial new uniforms will be just one more storyline to follow in what promises to be an eventful 2025 campaign.
